Preselling for profit
The number one strategy to increase your affiliate sales is preselling.
First, what is preselling? Well, it is an art. And it’s also a science. It’s a process of taking your reader and getting them ready to buy. Then when they’re ready, refer them to the product website so they can buy it. When done correctly, your reader will not even notice.
In a nutshell, you provide value. And then refer them to the product website. We’ll get into how to do it correctly in a minute. But before we do, you need to know why it’s so important. Here are a few benefits of preselling:
- Preselling creates trust – Readers who trust you are more likely to click your links. Which obviously means you’ll make more sales.
- It takes your reader out of defense mode – When you’re not hyping or pitching a product, your reader lets their guard down. Unguarded reading means they’re not filtering what you say. So your message gets across.
- It creates buying readiness – Now they trust you and feel open to your message. So they become more receptive to other messages. This includes the sales website you send them to! Being open to a sales message is what it means being in a buying mood.
- It increases your sales – They arrive at the product website prepped to buy. With the guard down and trusting your recommendation. The only possible result is more sales!
- It increases customer satisfaction – People like to make their own buying decisions. Instead of being manipulated into buying. So they are happier with their purchase.
- Preselling increases your bottom line – Happy customers ask for refunds much less often. Less refunds means more affiliate money stays in your pocket.

How does it work?
Now you know whey preselling is critical. And I hope you’re resolved to being preselling, too. So, let’s talk about how to make it work. Remember, there are two components – art and science.
Part 1 – The art of it
First, you have to gain the trust of your reader, so they let their guard down. And the only method of doing this is to give exceptional value to your readers. But you can’t give them so much that they think they have everything they could need, and that’s what makes it an art. The idea is that they want more and the sales page you send them to gives them more. Plus they’re not guarded, so they’re more open and likely to purchase the product.
The science component
You also have to include some very specific things.
First of all, it’s important HOW you present your information. You need to know where you’re going before you begin. In the end, you want to sell a specific product. There are two ways to accomplish this with great content. One way is to give them enough info to whet the appetite, but not enough to satisfy it. Or you can give them so much information that it feels overwhelming to do what you’re talking about. In either case, the product you’re referring them to solves the problem for them.
But you can’t link to your affiliate link. Instead you link directly to the product sales page. That’s because nobody likes to click on affiliate links. But, without your affiliate link, how do you get credit? There’s a trick to make this work… You “pre-cookie” your reader before sending them to the sales page.
Next, you want to make sure you’re linking on related words and phrases. Hyperlinked words are clicked more than anything else. And when the words are in context like this, it makes perfect sense for your reader to click them.
Using this system, you’re virtually guaranteed to increase your affiliate business success.
Now for the bad news…
This process is not easy – at all! Let’s talk about everything required to put this plan into action: Great content. First and foremost, you have to be able to write a great article that provides valuable information. To do that you have to have enough information to be valuable and be able to present it in a useful way. Writing to presell. Yes, you must providing useful content. And you have to make the content accessible in order to provide value. While at the same time making them want more. Or provide so much information that they see how hard it will be to implement.
Product selection. Next, you’ve got to pick the right product to presell. If you can manage to get the article written well. Your efforts are completely wasted if you don’t pick a winning product.
Technical skills. One of the keys to this system is using “covert cookies” for the tracking. This is fairly simple – you use a 1 X 1 image and set the “source” to your affiliate link. (But if you do it wrong, you won’t get paid for the traffic you send.)
